GOALS OF VILLA MAYA
Preserve natural resources: the private ecological reserve “Villa Maya” was initiated in 1994. It encompasses 35 hectares (approximately 86 acres).
Management of wild flora and fauna: conservation programs such as monitoring wild life, reproduction and reintroduction to wild environments
Develop Environmental Education Programs. Through education on economical, ecological and cultural values, the awareness of the locals and visitors to this island is enhanced.
Promote adventure and cultural tourism.
To make these objectives feasible, the natural resources of Villa Maya are being used in a sustainable way. Projects are financed by low-impact tourism, which at the same time is educational and entertaining.
The areas around “Villa Maya” encompass areas of vegetation, which are in different degrees of succession. This was occasioned by human activities such as the production of carbon (charcoal), the cultivation of corn, or traditional agriculture (poly-cultivation of corn-pumpkins-beans).
Different types of sites can be found during a short walk, it is possible to encounter many variations in temperature, humidity, soil and vegetation.
